Private or Shared Blue Mountain Coffee Tour?

This is the real decision on this mountain, and it is arithmetic rather than taste. The farm is the same farm. What changes is who else is in the vehicle, when it leaves, and whether you can add a stop.

Four travellers who want to be back by two, or a family with a toddler, or anyone who wants a named estate in the title: take a private car. The tipping point sits somewhere around the fourth traveller, and it moves with what you value.

The arithmetic

Both fares are quoted per person, so a private booking does not get cheaper per head as the party grows. That is the part people expect and do not get.

That table surprises people, and it is worth being blunt about it. On this inventory the private fares are per person rather than per vehicle. A private car does not amortise across four travellers the way a charter does, so the gap does not close as your party grows.

What that means in practice: the case for private is not economic at any party size. It is about what you get, and what you get is real.

What a private booking actually buys

• A named estate. The private Craighton half-day says which farm in its own title. The shared morning says "a coffee farm".
• An arranged start time. You confirm it with the operator rather than fitting a fixed circuit.
• Door-to-door collection. From your hotel or villa, not a meeting point.
• Room to add a stop. Strawberry Hill, Newcastle or a longer stay at Devon House, negotiated on the morning.
• Child provision. One private half-day states stroller access and infant seats, which is rare on this road.

What the shared morning does better

It reaches the north coast. Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay are on its pickup list at the same $90 it charges in Kingston, which no private booking matches. It also carries the farm entry inside the fare, which two of the private half-days do not.

And it is not always crowded. One traveller records a party of four who had the farm to themselves and watched the coaches arrive as they were leaving. The listing offers private or small groups, so what you get depends on the date rather than the label.

The third option nobody costs properly

Drive yourself and pay at the gate. US$25 an adult, US$15 for a child aged 6 to 12, and Craighton is open 8am to 4pm daily. For a family of four that is $80 against $360 for a shared morning.

What both formats have in common

More than the fare gap suggests. Every booking here includes the drive, a guide and the tasting. Every one refunds in full up to 24 hours before the start. None of them is wheelchair accessible, and none of them includes gratuities.

The farm is also the same farm more often than not. Craighton is the estate named in two product titles and it appears in the reviews of a third, so a shared seat and a private car can put you on the same slope with the same estate guide. What differs is who else is standing there with you, and when the vehicle leaves.

How to check before you book

• Read the stop list, not the headline. A tour that names Craighton is going to Craighton; one that says "a coffee farm" can change with the season.
• Look for the entrance fee. Only one listing states that the gate is inside the fare. On the others, add US$25 an adult.
• Check the pickup point. Four towns are served between them, and Negril is not one of them.
• Check the hours, not the price. Two hours and nine hours can both be sold as a coffee tour.
• Confirm the collection the evening before. The one-star review in this pool is a traveller who waited and was never collected.
